Understanding the Editing Process
There are typically several stages involved in preparing a piece of writing for submission or publication.
To summarize, your book or research may begin with a development edit, looking at the big picture, the flow of ideas, whether it is communicating what you intended and overall readability. You could follow this with a more in-depth line-by-line edit – strengthening and elevating each sentence.
Some authors go straight to the copyediting stage, where the more niggly details are considered such as consistency, punctuation and grammar. And finally a proofread, to check nothing was missed or new errors introduced during the previous editing rounds before submission or publication.
Each stage plays a different role in ensuring your work is clear, consistent and professionally presented.
My Services

1
Development Editing
If you have completed a draft but feel unsure about how it reads overall, a development edit focuses on the bigger picture — ensuring your work is clear, structured and effective.
You will receive a detailed editorial report with clear, practical feedback on content, structure, clarity and flow, helping you strengthen your work before moving to the next stage.
Big-picture clarity and structure
2
Copyediting
A copyedit is a detailed, word-by-word review that prepares your work for submission or publication. Similar to a line edit, it looks closely at clarity and readability while addressing grammar, punctuation, consistency and formatting – always working carefully to retain your voice and intent.

Working With You
Every project is different, and I tailor my approach to suit both your work and your goals.
I am passionate about retaining your voice and your style – this is, after all, your piece of work and you will remain in control of all amendments and on accepting alternative wording suggestions.
I have experience working with authors whose English is not their first language (ESL) and will ensure your writing reads clearly and naturally while preserving your voice. I also have experience working with authors with dyslexia, helping to ensure your words flow without losing your particular style of writing.
I cater to both UK and US English and happy to work with other variations such as Australian and Canadian, and I follow a range of style guides or adapt to specific in-house requirements.
How It Works
A clear and collaborative process, designed to keep you informed and in control at every stage.
